Why Are Filipinos Happier?

They say that Filipinos are a happy and contented people. And when Survey Research Hong Kong released its Asia-wide happiness survey early this year, it proved just that. The survey showed that despite poverty, 94 percent of Filipinos are more contented with their lives than other Asians.

In the same survey, almost a third of the Japanese admitted to being “generally miserable,” even if their per capita income of US $38, 980 is highest in Asia, and over five times more than that of Filipinos.

Why are Filipinos are happier than the Japanese or even their wealthier Asian neighbors? Dr. Ly Sycip, chairperson of the UP Department of Psychology, explained some reasons.

Economic needs: Are we happy to be poor?
In the past, Sycip says, many people assume that economics is the be-all of existence. “Psychologists like Abraham Maslow (hierarchy-of-needs theory) believed that you have to fulfill certain level of needs before you can move to the next higher level.

“Now that, of course, is being questioned in the Philippine context kasi karamihan ng mga Pilipino ay mahihirap. Kung titingnan mo, pati ‘yung mga basic needs are not met,” she says.

“Even the most basic need of shelter ay hindi na-meet. Then, if you follow Maslow’s theory, sasabihin mo na ang taong ito ay hindi na capable to experience fulfillment or the need for social relationships. When you look at Filipinos, that is not true,” she says.

She recalls how former First Lady Imelda Marcos even used it to justify her husband’s dictatorship. “She said that her people were happy people. If you look around you,” she quotes Imelda, “you’ll see that they’re all smiling, they’re all laughing.”

In terms of positive affect, she says, masasaya na ang mga tao noon. “And even Filipinos now, if you look at yung mga nangyayari sa atin ngayon – brownout, walang tubig, bumabagyo and so many things get damaged, still if you look around, mararami ka pa ring makikitang nakatawa.”

The family: Happy together
Based on the UP Department of Psychology’s preliminary findings on well-being, Sycip says that the family and other social relationships are “very important” to Filipinos. She says that it’s from there that they draw a lot of their strength. Filipinos rely on their families during their most difficult times. “In the more western orientation, you’ll think that you’re responsible for yourself, or all the burdens are there for you to carry. Dito, you’ll say that you have a family to take care of you. You’re not the only one responsible for yourself.”
Cultural systems: To cope and to be happy
According to Sycip, cultural systems like bahala na (whatever happens) and padrino (patronage) are also mechanisms for Filipinos to get fulfillment in life.

Bahala na. Filipinos cope by leaving to fate the outcome of their plans. In the western orientation, she says, an individual has a sense of control. “Iniisip mo I can play my life. I can do something with it. I can predict, let’s say, that if I put in this much effort, one year from now mapopromote ako o aabot ako sa ganoon”.

“If you look at the Philippine context, parang wala yung ganoon,” she says. “It’s so unpredictable. Given our conditions, there are so many uncontrollable factors. So if we, as people, cannot continue to persist in that kind of coping strategy, we would all go crazy. Iinit ang ulo natin. The level of frustration will be extremely high.”
“But this isn’t fatalism,” says Sycip. “We are just not attached to the results. We think bahala na pero we also do our best.”

Padrino. Filipinos know that in times of trouble, they can turn to friends for help. Filipinos have strong kinship ties and a high sense of pakikisama. “If you look at our history, patronage was really the only chance that many people had to ever get ahead or survive,” she says. Depende sa kung may kilala ka. Kahit papatayin kana eh hindi n asana.” Now, if one of your kids wants a job, that’s the only means to get him in. Hindi katulad sa US, people look at you for who you are and what you have done. It’s the individual concept.”

Religion: God can help us
Sycip says that Filipinos look toward God to help them come by. We even leave everything to Him when things come to worse.
“Religious tayo. We believe that there’s the Almighty who will, in the end, decide. So in a way we don’t have to worry so much. Nandoon ang Diyos ko,” she says.

Attitude: But we are truly a happy people!
Sycip agrees that Filipinos, despite all the ever-rising problems, are by nature a jovial and buoyant people. We’re happy, she says, because of the way we view life. “Iisa and attitude natin to cope with the kind of society we live in.”

Mababaw ang kaligayahan (lighthearted). Sycip points out: “Kung mababa lang ang expectations mo, very simple things will make you happy. May kasabihan nga tayo na mababaw lang ang kaligayahan. In a way, many of us are like that. I think that’s a quality of a survivor. You’re easy to please so you don’t look for too much.”
However, she add this has a negative effect in the sense that one may not be motivated to strive harder in life.
Still, Sycip also points: “In a way, people who are at the bottom are also afraid to hope, to expect, because hindi naman maibibigay. Magiging unhappy ka lang. They say, Mapag-aral ko lang ang mga anak ko o mapasok ko lang sila sa trabaho.”

Simpleng buhay lang (simple life)
Filipinos are not very materialistic, says Sycip. “Our attachment to them are not yet strong. Siguro ang daling mawala sa atin yun. Kaya we haven’t gotten into the mold na nasanay na tayo. The desire (to have material things) is there. Pero kung wala, okey lang. Balik ka lang sa dati.”

Madaling kausapin (high on interpersonal bonds or camaraderie).
This is where we rate high than the Japanese, Sycip says. Interpersonal relationships give us the chance to connect ourselves with others and we are happy about it.
“The Japanese culture is very formal,” she says. They rarely discuss personal matters so they have socio-personal problems. Tayo, we’re more open although very superficial ito. Hindi kasi tayo sanay to probe deeper in ourselves. That means we’re high on disclosure but we’re not introspective. We rely on our family and God.”

Always happy
Whatever other peoples and the foreign media call us, whether we’re the “sick man of Asia” or we have the shattered culture,” Filipinos will remain happy because we value it more than anything else.

“Filipinos are always complaining, but they also are always smiling. Parang schizophrenic ba tayo. Sometimes are happy to be unhappy. If the lader wil be there to solve our problems, we will reach a point na macu-culture shock tayo. But after a while, after we’ve learned to build more positive behavior, that will be good to all of us,” Sycip ends.

Boy's voice 'kills 400 chickens

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- Hundreds of chickens have been found dead in east China -- and a court has ruled that the cause of death was the screaming of a four-year-old boy who in turn had been scared by a barking dog, state media reported on Wednesday.

The bizarre sequence events began when the boy arrived at a village home in the eastern province of Jiangsu in the summer with his father who was delivering bottles of gas, the Nanjing Morning Post reported.

A villager was quoted as saying the little boy bent over the henhouse window, screaming for a long time, after being scared by the dog.

"One neighbor told police that he had heard the boy's crying that afternoon and another villager confirmed the boy screaming by the henhouse window," the newspaper said.

A court ruled the boy's screaming was "the only unexpected abnormal sound" and that 443 chickens trampled each other to death in fear.

The boy's father was ordered to pay 1,800 yuan ($230) in compensation to the owner of the chickens.

Responsibilities? Do We Really Have To Worry About It?

Recently, I turned down one promotion in the office because I was afraid and wasn’t prepared of the responsibilities attached on the position. Maybe I turned it down also for the reason that I am enjoying my existing job. I mean, in my present position I feel like I am boundless, uncontrolled, emancipated and free. There are no much worry to think about, no big responsibilities to take care of, and most of all I am free. But I am also thinking that if ever I accepted the position as a Team Manager/Leader, am I really capable of doing it satisfactorily?
That is why I researched on how or what are the roles of a Manager of People and below are the 14 points:
Role Of A Manager Of People
  1. A manager understands and conveys to his people the meaning of a system. He explains the aims of the system. He teaches his people to understand how the work of the group supports these aims.
  2. He helps his people to see themselves as components in a system, to work in cooperation with preceding stages and with following stages toward optimization of the efforts of all stages toward achievement of the aim.
  3. A manager of people understands that people are different from each other. He tries to create for everybody interest and challenge, and joy in work. He tries to optimize the family background, education, skills, hopes, and abilities of everyone. This is not ranking people. It is, instead, recognition of differences between people, and an attempt to put everybody in position for development.
  4. He is an unceasing learner. He encourages his people to study. He provides, when possible and feasible, seminars and courses for advancement of learning. He encourages continued education in college or university for people who are so inclined.
  5. He is a coach and counsel, not a judge.
  6. He understands a stable system. He understands the interaction between people and the circumstances that they work in. He understands that the performance of anyone that can learn a skill will come to a stable state – upon which further lessons will not bring improvement of performance. A manager of people knows that in this stable state it is distracting to tell the worker about a mistake.
  7. He has three sources of power:
1. Authority of office
2. Knowledge
3. Personality and persuasive power; tact
A successful manager of people develops Nos. 2 and 3; he does not rely on No. 1. He has nevertheless the obligation to use No. 1, as this source of power enables him to change the process – equipment, materials, methods – to bring improvement, such as to reduce variation in output.
He is in authority, but lacking knowledge or personality (No. 2 or 3), must depend on his formal power (No.1). He unconsciously fills a void in his qualifications by making it clear to everybody that he is in position of authority. His will be done.
  1. He will study results with the aim to improve his performance as a manager of people.
  2. He will try to discover who if anybody is outside the system, in need of special help. This can be accomplished with simple calculations, if there be individual figures on production or on failures. Special help may be only simple rearrangement of work. It might be more complicated. He in need of special help is not in the bottom 5% of the distribution of others: he creates an environment that encourages freedom and innovation.
  3. He creates trust. He creates an environment that encourages freedom and innovation.
  4. He does not expect perfection.
  5. He listens and learns without passing judgment on him that he listens to.
  6. He will hold an informal, unhurried conversation with every one of his people at least once a year, not for judgment, merely to listen. The purpose would be development of understanding of his people, their aims, hopes and fears. The meeting will be spontaneous, not planned ahead.
  7. He understands the benefits of cooperation and the losses from competition between people and between groups.
There you go, the roles of a Manager of People. If you think you have those traits then have no worry in accepting responsibilities.

There Are Just So Many Things That Is Yet To Accomplish

I am turning 26 this year and I thought I have done enough so many things but when I reflected to myself, I found out that there are sooo… many things that I have never yet accomplished any in my life, anything that I want to do… Even Donald Crowdis a 93-year-old blogger and was considered one of the oldest blogger nowadays, bothers that he have to go to another life. And here I am just wandering on this small city in the island of Mindanao, Philippines, thinking that I have already have a life to live, I mean I thought that what I have now is the life I wanted. Donald, in spite of his age still bothers of these things that he has never yet done so many things, he even floated on the remark "Been there, done that" for some time now and he doesn’t really wanna go for many reasons. There are just so many things that he wanted to do but isn’t yet done.

I wonder to myself, if Donald who has an age almost five times to my age, still never yet accomplished all that he wanted to do. Then, I think I must take actions now on doing things that I wanted to do before its getting late or before time is getting shorter for me to do it and I will start to fill out the list. And I understand Donald why he said that he hates to go.

(NTC) expects slower growth in 2007 For Mobile Phone Subscriber

“The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) estimates the number of cellular phone subscribers in 2006 to have reached 40 million but also expects slower growth in 2007 as the market becomes increasingly saturated.”

This is according to GMA news last January 9, 2007…

Do you think cellular phone subscribers will drop this year? Considering Filipinos who are keen to gadgets and gizmoz, I don’t think it will drop this year but rather increase. Anywhere you go, you can always see people using their mobile phones, in the malls, streets, restaurants, in the market place and even when you are commuting on jeepneys and buses, passengers are parading their latest brand of cellphones. That is why the theft and robbery cases increases because of the Filipino attitude of showing off their expensive gadgets in public just to be recognized. Even a 10-year-old elementary kid has cellphones, try to go to International Schools or other expensive Universities and you will see kids using it. That is why the demand for voice and text message services in the country is escalating, everywhere you look citizens are clamoring to talk or sending text messages on their mobiles. Maybe some users don’t want an expensive $500 iPhones or any latest mobile phones – they want a handset that is good for SMS, voice, and maybe a few other basic features and that is why the NTC estimated the slower growth of cellular phone subscribers for 2007, also maybe because most manufacturers nowadays are competing for a high-end features and expensive mobile phones that most users can’t afford. Ever wonder why Nokia phones are a hit here in the Philippines? It is because of its user-friendly interface and affordable price for most users.

Apparently, I think some mobile users are bored of texting using their phones and that is where chatting through IM’s are in, by using different chat services from Yahoo Messenger, MSN windows messenger, Google talk, skype and a lot more. How about the latest trend in Internet nowadays? I am talking about the blogging. Yes, it is somehow the new trend nowadays, Globe Network has G-Blogs feature in their services, which only tells us that it is the latest trend. Blogging is where you can post all your thoughts and ideas for others to read and even share pictures; in that way you can express your ideas. You can even exchange your opinions between your readers through its comment section. This trend is just telling us that we are not stuck on texting alone through cellphones, this is only telling us that we are moving, we are progressing. Cellular or mobile phones in the future will be extinct and it will be the new computer or your all-in-one gadget soon.

PPP - Pathetic Plastic People

Oh no! Most Filipinos are such an American puppies, I mean you can see it the way they approach between an American and a fellow Filipino. I am a Filipino and I can say that because that is what I can see or observe here in this country.

I have encountered a situation where one particular office has visitors at the same time, two Americans and a Filipino. What made me a little bit pissed off is that, the two foreigners were accommodated perfectly with friendly gestures but when they approached this Filipino visitor their aura or facial expression changes into something like they don’t wanna talk with him (The Filipino visitor) and when they get back to the two Americans, it seems like their face are glowing and they seems like a smiling babies when they approached them. And you can hear it in their laugh the tone of unreal laugh, I mean “plastic laugh” just to make the two Americans feel better everytime they cracked a corny joke. Arg!!!

Well, we can see that to most of our country’s leaders. When an American talks they always listens and always say yes.

I am not an anti-American I am just against to those people I described.

Apple's New Product - iPhone

"iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone."

Wow! This is a phone of the next generation, but will this hit the masses just like Nokia phones? It combines 3 products in one gadget, from mobile phone to Ipod to internet communications device such as email, web browsing, maps, etc.

Cool phone huh! I gotta have one next year... hehehe... they said it will be release in Asia on year 2008 and that is a very long wait... It might be so obsolete that time when it arrives here in the Philippines, and Nokia Phones will still rule the Philippine Telecommunications.

So, for the iPhones distributors think again of releasing it here next year. Nokia Phones might have created more than that before it hits here.

Because Of Men The World Is...

Happy New Year!

I have been reading Bo Sanchez’ Blog and he posted a topic entitled “Are You A Real Man?” It catches my attention and thinking who is he talking to. So I read it and he pointed some of these facts about man involved in world crisis today and he is talking to all the men today.

Here are some of the lines from his blog:

Do you know why the world is in crisis today?

I’ll tell you why: Because men don’t know how to become real men.

Because fathers don’t train their sons how to live life.

Because fathers don’t raise their sons in the ways of the Lord.

Because fathers don’t mentor their sons to take responsibility.

Because fathers don’t teach their sons how to relate to women.

Because fathers don’t love and protect their wives.

Because fathers don’t lead their families towards a vision.

They’re cowards. They’re macho on the outside but flakes on the inside. They’re irresponsible. They’re passive. They’re parasitic jello.

Fathers don’t really “father” their kids on a daily basis. They leave childrearing to the mothers. They have no vision for their families.

Make no mistake about it. Families are in crisis today because we lack godly husbands and godly fathers.

The crisis of the world today is a crisis for manhood.
